Kim puts a Haines 542cc to the test
This week Escape's Kim Bain puts a Haines 542cc Centre Console fishing boat to the test.
The Haines is powered by a Yamaha 115 Outboard, and has enough power to get you to the fishing hotspots quickly, and bring you back in a hurry should things turn ugly.
The centre console means there is plenty of space to move around, and this boat has no problems offshore.
The fibreglass 5.4 metre hull features a specially designed variable dead-rise hull, which creates a soft ride, even in choppy conditions. The 542 can get up on the plane at just 6 knots, which not only saves you fuel, but offers better vision trolling lures offshore.
With no cabin or canopy, the 542 is not made for shade - you'll need a hat - but the design definitely has the angler in mind.
You can fish right up to the edge of the boat without fear of toppling overboard thanks to the recessed toe hold in the floor.
A forward platform allows you to cast further, whilst the live bait tank can be automatically filled from the console.
If you're a serious fisherman who also likes to have a bit of power under throttle, this could be the boat for you.
