Shane Heal fishes with ET

Shane Heal knows a lot about putting things into nets…

Except when it comes to fishing. So I reckon it's about time he learnt.

"Hi ET, bring on the fish.. anything you can bring me as long as we get something in the boat, I'm happy."

Since he rejoined the Sydney Kings, Shane and his family live a stone's throw from Port Hacking…So I'm gonna show off the local sights, and show him how to hunt for flathead.

"Actually usually I feed the fish, I get a bit seasick, but it's beautiful here - fantastic."

We're using live potty mullet as bait… and the yo-yo method to attract the flathead.

ET: "You lift the line up and down… the sinker lifts up and gives a puff of sand ... hopefully a flathead will see it and nail the live potty."

Shane might be a novice out here.. but on the court, Shane is a real Aussie success story.

In his first season in '88, he was voted Rookie of The Year. Not bad for a bloke who's only 6 foot one - a shorty in basketball.

Shane: "Growing up small in a big man's game, I had determination and did not listen to those who said I was too small to make it - you just have to be able to shoot better than the bigger guys."

And he's certainly proved he can do it… The guard they call Hammer has played in three Olympic games for the Boomers.

Shane was only the second Aussie ever to play in America's NBA, when he was headhunted by Minnesota.

More recently, he's competed in Europe and now, he's back with the Sydney Kings. Shane's trademark is being able to land the big baskets from behind the arc.

Though at the moment he's having trouble just landing a bit of bait!

"Got one!… I thought you were joking about the spikey bit!"

Well, no luck today with the flathead… but we do snare something with a little more bite…

A blue swimmer crab.

He might have come up against wildcats, crocodiles, Taipans and Tigers... but I discovered Hammer Heal really HATES crabs…

"Get rid of him mate, I don't wanna go near him !!"

Shane is happy to settle back into the relaxed Sydney lifestyle, and he's keen to go all the way with the Kings.
