Bribie Island 4WDing
If you're searching
for a quick and easy escape destination
paradise is a lot
closer than you think.
This is Bribie
Island, right on Brisbane's doorstep. In less than an horu and
a half you can be out of the city, on the beach for a great day
of four wheel driving or relaxation.
Bribie is Queensland's
only offshore island that's linked to the mainland by bridge.
So it's very easy access.
With the Pacific
Ocean lapping it's eastern shores, it's great for a bit of surf
action... Or for peace and tranquility, there's the waters of
Pumicestone Passage Marine Park, where you might even have some
company.
What many holidaymakers
don't realise.. is that Bribie has some great 4WD tracks, and
miles of white beaches to explore.
80% of the island
is National Park so make sure you get a permit... and keep your
eyes open... Bribie is hiding a couple of wartime secrets.
Bribie Island
played a vital role in the defence of Australia during WWII with
a number of bunkers and Fort Bribie protecting the mouth of the
Brisbane River and Moreton Bay.
It's worth a
trek behind the dunes on the island's eastern side to have a
look at these solid old fellas. They're a bit rough around the
edges now but that's not surprising considering the Australian
army tried to blow them out of the ground !
War is long
forgotten and Bribie is now an island of peace and quiet...
It has accommodation to suit every budget and is so close to
one of Australia's major cities - it could be the ideal spot
to take a quick break.
Bribie Island
is about 60 kilometres drive from Brisbane. You can also catch
a bus or train.
4 wheel drive
permits are available from the Council or Bongaree Caravan Park
on the island.
If you want
to camp, you can buy a permit from the ranger's office on the
island for just $3.85 per person.
