John Paul Young

This man is by no means Yesterday's Hero. John Paul Young is one of our most enduring performers.

His career has spanned 3 decades and so has his passion for fishing.

We're heading out from Darling Harbour, and I'm hoping the one-time king of Countdown will help us track down some kingfish.

JPY has loved throwing in a line since he was a youngster, catching mullet in the Williams river…and hooking bream in Sydney Harbour.

And as he fished on these shores as a kid, he never dreamt he'd one day be performing in places like the Opera House.

Until his mates convinced him that he could sing…

His career took off with a string of number ones in the 70s.

And a rebirth in 1992 when the owner of his record company, Ted Albert, got him mixed up in a movie called Strictly Ballroom.

These days, JPY lives on Lake Macquarie where he catches a heap of prawn and squid for the barbie.

Today, we're using live squid as bait… to tempt a kingfish out from this wedding cake pylon.

Here come the waterways, what have we done… I know we're registered !! But we ARE blocking the shipping channel.. so time to move along.

Safely relocated, we wait for the fish… and I mean wait..

In the meantime, JPY proves even someone of his stature can tell pretty tall fishing tales!

"We were fishing yellowfin off Jervis Bay….My line went off - 45 minutes later I got it in. A 70 kilo marlin !"

Well, no such luck today… so we're heading home empty handed.

At least we don't have to clean any fish !!
