River Sledging
This is New Zealand's whitewater
wonderland - the mighty Kaituna River, which froths and boils
round the outskirts of Rotorua.
In Maori, Kaituna means "eel
food" but the eels won't be making a meal of me today
I'm protected from top to tail.
Why the warrior-ware? We're
going Whitewater Sledging
.
With the sound of thunder all
around us - we take on the Kaituna
And these first rapids
really get the blood pumping!
Whenever someone comes unstuck
like me
a guide is straight to the rescue.
I'm starting to feel pretty
confident about this sledging game, But lurking round the bend
is the big one!
Uh Oh! This is the highest
sledged vertical drop in the world
so a few words of warning
from our guide.
A pulsation of water going
up and down, up and down, we do not want to go right
our
line here is left. Go left, left, left. The experts manage to
make it look easy.
But I need a little psyching
up!
Adrenalin pumping, I take the
plunge! Now I KNOW what its like to be inside a washing machine!
After that thrill, the rest
of the river is a relaxing paddle
we even score a surf!
Well what do you say? Like
most things on this show I haven't done that before, but that
was challenging and invigorating and tiring and scary and just
great
you've got to go whitewater sledging .. now you
can take the helmet off me
. Anybody?
The Kaituna River is 15 minutes
out of Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island.
