The Victorian High Country
The Victorian high country
has a special place in Australian folklore
These mountains
were home to the Man from Snowy River
Our starting point for the
High Country is the town of Mansfield
and I've chosen a
route that will take us up and around Mt Stirling and on to Mt
Buller
As we climb our way into the
mountains, the scenery turns from lush temperate rainforest to
eerie eucalylpts in the mist
Our first stop is Craig's Hut,
which was built as the home of the Man from Snowy River, for
the film of the same name.
Off road drivers sometimes
get a bit of a bad rap, but this hut was going to the pack, before
the local 4wd club stepped in, restoring the hut for the use
of drivers, trekkers and skiers alike
Although these trails are generally
well maintained, there are still sections where you need to be
on guard
Most tracks in the high country
are pretty narrow, so be careful when approaching corners, be
on the lookout for approaching vehicles.
And there are some sections
where it gets pretty tough on your tyres
So make sure you
take the right equipment with you, so that if you get a puncture,
you can repair it.
As the peak of Mount Buller
approaches, snow gum gives way to alpine meadow
and what
a view!
Mount Buller
literally
the end of the track. Although renowned for it's winter sports,
in the warmer months it makes a spectacular 4wd destination.
We travelled 150 kilometres
for our round trip from Mansfield to Mt Buller and back again.
It's an easy and spectacular day trip from Melbourne.
