Zoe on Fraser Island
Now, I've never been to Fraser
Island before, and there are two things I want to do whilst I'm
here
one is to check out the world famous Kingfisher Bay
Resort
and the second, is to try my hand at sailing!
Luckily, the weather's perfect
and my trusty instructor Tim ensures it's smooth sailing.
Before long, we're running
with the wind
broadreaching, tacking and jibbing with the
best of them
the wind in our sails
the salty air
in our nostrils
I reckon I'm confident enough
to "go it alone"
so, with a few last minute tips
from Tim
I'm on my way
and, I'm doing pretty well
Although I do learn that if
you turn away from the wind.. you might make a surprise change
of direction!
Mmmm
. let's try something
a little more peaceful.
Now, one of the most important
parts of Fraser's ecosystem are these mangroves that exist along
it's western side, and they are significant for a number of reasons
The mangroves act as a buffer
between the ocean and this delicate landmass
without them,
there would be no island!
They also act as a natural
filtration system, and support a great range of fauna
including
70% of all commercial species of fish!
Fraser Island is ecotourism
at it's best
and Kingfisher Bay Resort is an ideal base
for exploring Fraser. You can really get back to nature here,
but still enjoy all the best creature comforts.
The quickest way onto Fraser
Island is to fly to Hervey Bay. Ansett flies daily to Brisbane,
and there are several connecting flights a day to Hervey Bay,
or it's about a three and a half hour drive from Brisbane.
Kingfisher Bay Resort can help
arrange your passenger or car transfers from Hervey Bay across
to the island. The resort has self contained villas set in the
bush from $795 for 3 nights, or hotel rooms from $248 a night.
Contact the resort or Tourism
Qld for more details of prices and packages for an escape to
beautiful Fraser Island.
