The Great Ocean Road
A scenic drive
sure,
why not, but if you're going to do it, you may as well do it
in style
and this MUST be one of the world's finest scenic
drives.
The Great Ocean Road, which
winds it's way around the southern coastline of Victoria
The MR2 convertible is just
to help me fully soak up the experience.
Our first stop: a surfing landmark...
Bells Beach. Even though I feel a tad overdressed being here,
today it's definitely living up to it's reputation as being one
of the hottest surfing spots in the world.
The road really begins to hug
the coastline at the seaside community of Angelsea
The Great Ocean Road is actually
a Memorial Drive, built to commemorate the bravery of Victorian
soldiers in World War I.
A more breathtaking monument
is hard to imagine, and it's now one of Australia's foremost
tourist attractions.
As the road snakes its' way
southward, the land that meets the ocean shifts subtly from wide
beachfront to sheer cliff face and rainforest
Past Apollo Bay, the road ducks
inland through lush pasture land, which adds another dimension
to our trip.
A comfortable half day drive
from Melbourne, I reach my destination: the awe inspiring Twelve
Apostles
pillars of rock thrusting from the Southern Ocean,
sculpted by erosion over millions of years
There is definitely
something almost spiritual about this place
About 30 minutes from the Apostles,
heading back toward Melbourne is The Hordern Vale Guest House,
ideally positioned for an overnight stopover.
After a day of awe inspiring
beauty
this is the perfect way to unwind.
We started our Ocean Road adventure
at Bells Beach, went through Anglesea to Port Campbell then back
to stopover in Hordern Vale.
The Hordern Vale Guest House
has the feel of a homestead, with the comfort of a 5 star hotel
B&B Rooms start at $135
midweek and $149 on weekends.. and you pay a little extra for
the lobster dinner!
Phone Gary or Sheryl at Hordernvale
for more details.
Tourism Victoria can tell you
about all the best spots to see along the Great Ocean Rd. Phone
them, or visit their website.
