Cairns Reef Scuba Diving
Everyone knows
the Great Barrier Reef is the seventh wonder of world.. and the
best way to see it is to go down under, literally !
We've come
out to the reef aboard the Ocean Spirit I, a glorious sailing
catamaran.
And while the
rest of my shipmates frolic and snorkel, I've decided to learn
scuba-diving.
Don't be fooled
by all the gear. Scuba-diving - so I'm told - is easier than
snorkelling.
After going
through my paces in the shallows, it's time head for open water.
I'm feeling
a bit nervous as I suffer a little from claustrophobia.
But the key
to scuba-diving is to take long, easy breaths. That isn't always
easy when you're confronted with beauty on this scale. It's all
I can do not to gasp !
You cannot
believe how simple it is
.it is incredible.. you forget
that you are loaded up with gear and you just cruise through
the water like a fish. It's absolutely marvellous.
Before we go
- a chance to explore the wildlife above the water
on Michaelmas
Cay. This is a natural wonder in its' own right, being a haven
for thousands of sea birds.
There's a saying
on the Great Barrier Reef, "Take only photographs, and leave
only footprints."
The Ocean Spirit
cruise to Michaelmas Cay departs Cairns every day except Christmas.
The cruise
costs $155 per person.
A guided scuba
dive is an extra $85.
Lunch plus
your snorkelling and diving equipment is included.
If you would
prefer to see the reef without getting wet, you can board the
Ocean Spirit semi-submersible.
Back in Cairns,
stay at the Cairns Colonial Club.. with double rooms from $151
a night. |
