Ocean Beach Camping You don't always have to trek into the deep dark wilderness to escape the ratrace. A quick trip across the Hawkesbury River from Sydney, and you're surrounded by bush and beach. I'm trying out Toyota's new restyled Hilux… a turbo charged diesel that's a great weekday workhorse and also has plenty of room for your weekend getaway gear. One of great things about camping these days is its just too easy - practical, affordable and you can use any excuse in the book to put things in car and go. Pick yourself a suitable campsite with a good outlook. Make sure you're not in a water course or where a tree might drop a branch on your tent. Lay your groundsheet down, and make sure it's not larger than your tent or water will hit the outside and run under your tent. Peg out the tent corners first, then the rest of the pegs… before you assemble the poles. These are springloaded poles and designed to have flex. They will only take so much flex and then they will break. They're very strong but it doesn't hurt to have a spare set. If they do break, it's difficult to bend a tree in the same shape as these flexible poles. For a weekend break, you probably only need a single room tent like the Overlander 4. It's a quick one man job to erect the poles and attach the tent. To make sure the body of your tent is dry and well ventilated, make sure the fly is well tensioned out either side. In less than half an hour, we have 5 star accommodation. Now it's time to go and explore ! For a sparkling view of the southern end of the coast… take a trek to Mt Ettalong lookout. The sounds & smells of the Australian bush. You don't get the full effect sitting at home watching this computer screen, that's for sure.
