Hobart Sightseeing
A campervan
is a great way to tour Tasmania.
But to experience
the sights, sounds and smells of Hobart, I'm taking a two wheeled
guided tour.
Local motorbike
fanatic Farrell White is taking me sightseeing by scooter. There's
room for two on this Yamaha Aerox - and you can zip through the
traffic without any parking hassles.
Hobart has
plenty to see - from history to harbourside.
But on a day
like today - our aim is pure indulgence.
First stop
is Australia's oldest brewery
in the foothills of Mount
Wellington.
The Cascade
Brewery is one of Hobart's landmarks - its been operating since
1824.
Inside, there
are plenty of remnants of those early days - including accounts
ledgers that date back more than a century.
And this has
to be one of the nicest beer gardens in the world.
When you check
out the oldest brewery in Aus - it's only natural to sample some
of the goodies. And for an old beer, it tastes pretty good !
Hmmm.OK, time
for something a little sweeter.
This is my
kind of production line! At the Cadbury's factory in Claremont
- you can watch all your favourite chocolates come to life.
Some of them
more lively than others!
Caramello Koala
is our guide and my new best friend, showing us how they transform
the cocoa into fine milk chocolate.
Claremont was
chosen as Cadbury's first Aussie factory back in 1921, because
there was a great supply of fresh Tassie milk.
And boy - do
they need it!
They use 65
million litres of milk every year to make all those bars and
blocks. That's one very big glass and a half!
Now there's
only one thing left to do
Unfortunately, I don't think
we'll fit back on the scooter.
So for our
last tour, we'll let someone else do all the driving.
They say good
things come in small packages and with oysters I could say that's
definitely true.
Barilla Bay
Seafoods farm Pacific oysters for local and international customers.
The oysters
are grown in trays and cylinders for about 18 months, until they
reach the perfect size and shape.
"With
the flavour of an oyster, it's dictated by local conditions,
like a winery. The water in this area makes our oysters taste
that particular way."
And I don't
need any convincing that this is a very fine crop.
Honestly, I
couldn't fit another thing in..Well, maybe just one more taste
!!!
Cascade Brewery
in Hobart is open to the public Monday to Friday.
Guided tours
of the brewery are also available.
You can take
a mouthwatering tour of Cadbury's Claremont factory any day of
the week.
The cost is
$11 for adults and 5.50 for kids.
Barilla Bay
Oysters is open daily for sales.. and on Saturdays, you can
take a tour of the farm and even sample a few fresh oysters.
