Devonport Whitewater Rafting
The thundering
walls of water in the Mersey river system are basically used
for hydro-electricity, but today I'm using them for sheer fun,
going white water rafting.
The Hydro Electricity
Commission regularly releases water into the Mersey, providing
the most reliable whitewater in Tassie.
Aardvark Adventures
can show you how to harness it!
A quick safety
drill on the bank, and we'll be riding the rapids.
The Mersey
helps power almost 16% of Tasmania.
And once you're
bobbing around on it in a rubber raft, it's easy to see how that's
possible. It really moves.
On a scale
of 1-5, this section of the river is graded 2 to 3, so it's challenging,
but not too scary.
Although, when
you're about to plunge into rapids with names like Berlin Wall
and The Washing Machine, you have to wonder
Luckily, the
boys provide a long john wetsuit. The Mersey is mighty icy, and
there is no way you're not going to get wet.
Actually its
amazing how secure you feel out here being tossed around the
rapids.
The trip takes
about an hour and a half
and the Aardvark crew make sure
you stay on track, and stay safe.
It's like a
ninety-minute themepark ride - with fantastic scenery.
By the end
of the run, I'm exhausted
but there's one sure-fire way
to re-invigorate me.. a bucketful of the ice cold water !
That was both
wet and wild. It was very cool !!
