Sandy Cape
We're en route
to some of the wildest country the west coast of Tasmania has
to offer. And this is the small fishing village of Temma.
Now have a
look at that ocean, is that magnificent or what ?
Sandy Cape
is part of the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area - 100,000 hectares
of pristine white sand and wilderness.
Humans have
never even set foot on about 70% of this land!
You could easily
believe that the Tassie tiger still roams these parts.
I'm with the
boys from Wilderness to West Coast Tours, and they're taking
me through untamed Tassie.
We've ventured
into some of the most spectacular and untouched country on the
face of the planet, there's no doubting that.
Just to give
you an idea of how remote this area is, it's 15,000 kms from
here across that deep blue ocean to the next piece of dry land,
which happens to be the east coast of Argentina.
Sandy Cape
Beach is serious 4WD terrain - beautiful but treacherous.
It's got everything.
Quicksand, unpredictable flowing rivers, wild winds.
They tell me
on a bad day, it can take up to 4 hours to travel ten kilometres
of beach!
And the dunes,
well
it's like driving up the side of a pyramid.
The Landcruiser's
getting a good workout, but it's time to leave land and hit the
water.
'Well, the
fellas tell me there are crayfish in these waters, but the great
southern ocean is not gonna be warm. Nice thick wetsuit and I'll
be right.'
What a spot!
The water is teeming with life. But remember, you need a licence
to harvest cray and abalone.
'These waters
are alive. The great southern ocean is alive with creatures.
Aren't they magnificent? Beautiful abalone, southern crayfish
oh
yeah.'
These go back
where I found them, but, with the light fading, we head out to
see what Bernard's got in his craypot.
Back at the
cabin, it's abalone entrée followed by a course of succulent
crays, all washed down with a fine Tassie pinot noir.
Roughing it
was never so smooth!
If you're willing
to rough it in this amazing countryside
Wilderness to West
Coast Tours conduct a 3 day, two night Sandy Cape Adventure.
It costs $499
per person, including accommodation, meals and fishing gear.
Qantas flies
to Tasmania daily from most capital cities.
