Tasmanian Estuary Fishing
When you think
of fishing in Tassie - you usually think of trout.
But in estuaries
like Anson's Bay - it's black bream that'll give you a run for
your money!
Michael's hooked
up to a beautiful black on the first cast.
Black bream
stay in these river systems to breed and feed, scavenging on
everything from algae to shellfish.
We're using
yabbies on long rods and light gear - and it seems to be doing
the trick!
These guys
are sensational sportfish
and they're very cunning.
Once they're
hooked, they'll head straight for the snags!
This weighty
fellow is just average for this area - and what a set of choppers!
Tasmanian bream
are nice and big. This fella can live to fight another day !
Bream adapt
to their surroundings. There's plenty of tannin in the water
here - so these beautiful dark fish certainly live up to their
name.
They've never
been commercially fished in Tasmania
so you're guaranteed
a session of chaotic catches !
The bag limit
in Tasmania is ten - but we're more than happy to catch and release.
Tasmania's
far north east is famous for its bream fishing - and this afternoon,
my guide Michael Haley is targetting the channel in Anson's Bay.
"We've
got a channel that runs through here, a sand spit over here and
bream come through this corridor. As the tide runs off the flats,
fish drop into the hole and wait for food to drift over the top
and grab it as it comes past."
This is dining
heaven for black bream. They love the shellfish that live in
the flats and weedbeds, so we're back on the good old yabbies.
And our chemically
sharpened hooks are nice and long to hold the yabby well.
Michael actually
keeps his yabbies in the fridge for a couple of days to stay
fresh. And these blokes seem to love it!
This species
is sometimes known as bluenose bream - and you can see why.
Michael Haley
can take you for a full day's session on the black bream in Anson's
