Gordon River
This is one
of the last remaining pristine river systems.
We're surrounded
by ancient rainforest and wildlife that can't be found anywhere
else in the world.
And to help
us negotiate this untamed river, I'm going to enlist the help
of a real lady.
I'm cruising
the Gordon River aboard the Lady Jane Franklin, which departs
from Strahan to take you right into the heart of this World Heritage
area.
This luxury
cruiser might look massive, but the Lady Jane has been specially
designed with low wash and quiet engines, so she can tread softly
through this wilderness.
And just check
out the luxury on the upper deck.
A stopover
at the Heritage Landing walkway gives us a closer look at some
of the rarest rainforest on earth.
As well as
a biology lesson, you can also brush up on history. Here at the
brutal Sarah Island penal colony, you can experience life as
a convict.
The colony
was set up in 1822.. and the harsh conditions on this remote
island meant only the worst convicts were sent here. And by the
sounds of it - their gaolers weren't much better!
The first commandant
was described as a sadistic bully with peculiar tendencies, supposed
to have drowned accidentally.
On our way
back, we explore Macquarie Harbour, Australia's second largest
Harbour. And I can't resist taking a little side trip with Mario
from Strahan Marine Charters -who's promised to introduce me
to some of the locals.
Here in Strahan
there are two major industries, tourism and fish farming. We're
checking rainbow trout and atlantic salmon.
Here in Macquarie
Harbour conditions are so good that atlantic salmon grow from
this big to 6 kg in one year !
Feeding time,
now I wouldn't mind throwing a line in here !
The hose helps
spread out the feed - and you can see why! More than 12 thousand
hungry rainbow trout are waiting for their dinner.
These fellas
will grow to about 3 and half kilos - until they end up on someone's
dinner plate.
Time to head
back to the mothership and enjoy the end of our cruise.
You'll be captivated
the minute you step aboard the LJF. By the spectacular scenery
and the historical significance of the region. Make sure you
check it out.
