Trailbiking with Lyndon Heffernan
I'm kitting
up in a bit of colourful clobber, but it certainly won't look
this flash for long!
Because I'm
about to hit the dirt with Aussie motocross champion Lyndon Heffernan.
I'm looking
pretty good so far, but see how I am after my first fall, which
should be coming up just around the corner.
Lyndon coaches
offroad motorcycling across Australia
teaching everything
from braking and clutch use, to handling big jumps.
I've dirt-biked
a couple of times before.. but today I think I'll start with
the basics!
Lyndon's already
showing his flair
while I'm just quietly easing my way
into it. Mind you - he's thrown me into the deep end on the biggest
bike Yamaha make - the 426. Not for the feinthearted !
Thankfully,
Lyndon lets me scale down to something a little lighter
a Yammie motocross two stroke.
I think I'll
let the expert take over !
Lyndon has
been offroad racing for 20 years. He's two times winner of the
prestigious Thunder Nats Series
and had 3 years on the world
championship circuit.
These days,
he's encouraging other Aussies to take up the sport, with the
Yamaha coaching academy
and his trail-biking company Detour.
Lyndon's number
one priority is rider safety.
This master
of the motocross is also keen to clean up the image of dirtbikers
in the bush.
"When
we go somewhere we don't mess up, don't make new trails, and
try to use the bush responsibly like most people. There is a
rogue element, but the guys who come with me all have licenses.
We try to look after the place so more people can use it in the
future."
