Oz Trek 4WD Tours
Trails blazed
through these mountains all those years back were the main highways
for the first pioneers.
These days,
they open up this pristine wilderness to the modern day explorer
in his 4WD.
I'm winding
through the Bateman's Bay hinterland with the crew from Oz-Trek
Fourwheel drive tours.
A great way
to explore new areas and still use your own 4WD is to join tagalong
tours. You're under the guidance of someone who knows the area
and guarantees your safety.
You still experience
driving the trails yourself.. but guide Richard Dunne supplies
us with two-way radios. So he can give us tips about the road
ahead, and a few insights into the local fauna and flora.
Our trail takes
us through the Clyde State Forest, which spans about 200 kilometres
of eucalypt and wattle.
Then onto the
top of Mount Mogley for a view that just can't be bought.
These are the
vast southern forests. All this area is a catchment for the Clyde
River on the south coast. Mountains as far as you can see, just
beautiful.
The Prado really
makes navigating these sort of tracks quite comfortable but there
are a few things you still have to consider.
We've had a
bit of rain, so the track is a bit slippery and you don't want
to end up down an embankment. Also other people in their vehicles
have to use these tracks after us. It's all about caring for
the environment.
Tagalong tours
only go as fast as the slowest vehicle, so even the most inexperienced
drivers get through the tricky bits.
But don't be
fooled - there are still plenty of hairy challenges for seasoned
drivers.
Tony's an old
hand at fourwheeling, and keeps coming back to Oz-Trek tours.
Once we hit
the valleys, we're surrounded by some spectacular temperate rainforest!
Well this is
our luncheon spot. The upper reaches of the Bimbramala River,
set amongst some of the most pristine south coast forest you
can find.
At end of a
really hard day at the office, you can always rely on mother
nature to provide a nice soothing spa bath.
Oz Trek four
wheel drive tours can take you for a half or full day tagalong
tour around the beautiful South Coast hinterland.
You'll pay
$80 for a full day in your own vehicle.. or you can pay extra
and travel as a passenger in the Oz-trek fourwheeler.
Stay in Bateman's
Bay at the Coachhouse Marina Resort, with deluxe spa units from
$160 a night.
