Cathedral Rocks

When it comes to wild and beautiful places to explore, NSW has plenty to offer.

This journey kicks off in the little town of Ebor, about 50kms from Dorrigo. We're heading into sub-alpine country, following what they they call the waterfall way.

One of the most enjoyable aspects is the actual journey in this hundred series landcruiser…no road noise….high driving position… breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

There's definitely no shortage of water on the plateau…. I'm here at Ebor Falls… and thanks to some recent rainfall she is thundering down.

One of the main attractions on the Waterfall Way is Cathedral Rocks National Park, about 70kms east of Armidale.

That's where I'm heading. But first, I have to register to camp.

And what a spot. If you're lucky, you might even find yourself bathing with the natives…

This is the Barokee camping ground. National Parks provides firewood, but I think I'll opt for a more modern cooking method. I'm going to need some sustenance. I've got a bit of rock-hopping ahead of me…

From the Barokee camping ground, the Cathedral Rocks are about a 3 hour round trip…

This is the Cathedral Rocks walking track. It's a bit over five kms, but remember…this is alpine country… so when you're heading up the top…take a warm jacket that's preferably something waterproof.

The landscape changes dramatically up here. Suddenly I'm in a dark green world of ferns, and huge granite outcrops loom over me. Positively prehistoric.

You can climb right to the top of Cathedral Rock, but be warned, it's no simple stairway to heaven…

If the climb doesn't take your breath away, there's always the view from the top…

Cathedral Rocks National Park and Barokee Camping Grounds are east of Armidale in NSW. It's one of many NSW National Parks worth a visit. For more details, take a look at npws.nsw.gov.au

I toured the National Park in a Toyota 100 Series diesel Landcruiser. You'll find out all about this sensational 4WD on the Toyota website.
