Island Adventure
If you want
a little help exploring the islands of Samoa, the guides at Sa'moana
Resort know just about every twist and turn of this tropical
paradise.
Martin's taking
me on an eco adventure of Upolu, starting on the lush south coast
of the island. I'm also lucky enough to be joined by Natasha,
who was runner-up in the Miss Samoa quest
First stop
is a local watering hole.
The Samoas
are the heart of Polynesia, an archipelago of 13 volcanic islands
in middle of Pacific.
This is the
Togitoginga (Tonga-tongee-ar) cascade - and Martin reckons his
30 foot leap of faith is an everyday activity in this part of
the world. So if you can't beat 'em
That's one
way to cool off in the tropics.
Samoans flock
to the falls and freshwater pool for picnics - or in local lingo
- taftough (taft-ou-nga). And you can see why.
Samoa's volcanic
islands have very rich soil, so the rainforests just thrive. And
hidden away amongst the greenery are some awesome spots to sit
and soak up the sights.
We stick to
the south coast of the island, and arrive at the little village
of Lotofaga (Lot-too-funga).The water is like crystal
but
apparently we're here for more than a quick dip.
At first, it
looks like we're snorkelling towards a sheer rock face. But Martin
takes me under two ledges and we're suddenly in an underwater
lava cave. This is known as To Sua - 'trench with water'.
Upolu is the
most populated of Samoa's islands, but you wouldn't know it.
Sometimes you feel like you're the only car on the road, or in
this case, the goat track!
Back on the
tarmac, the south coast road leads to beaches straight out of
the glossy brochures.
We've just
pulled up at the southeast point of the island.
This is Saleipaga
(sal-ay-punga) and Natasha tells me it's quite an exclusive resort
for Samoans. You can even rent your own little piece of paradise
in a Gogosiva beach fale.
Fales can be
rented overnight for about $30 per person including meals.
We've made
our way right back to the northern side of the island hugging
the coastline. I;ve been invited to have a swim in the Piula
cave pool.
The cave pool
is right next to the ocean, and it's packed full of jungle perch. The
freshwater makes it mighty chilly, but I reckon these kids have
the right idea - straight in feet first
Its so easy
to see why Samoa is known as the treasure islands of the pacific
and my journey was made extra special by the wonderful people
at samoana resort.
Our island
eco-tour was run by Samoana Resort. The resort has some sensational
holiday deals. A six and a half day package includes economy
flights from Sydney on Polynesian Airlines, accommodation and
meals, airport transfers and departure tax. All from just $1,999.
Polynesian
Airlines flies to Samoa a few times a week from various Australian
capital cities. We flew with Virgin Blue to Sydney to depart
for Samoa.

their sensational fares at virginblue.com.au or call 13 67 89.
I went sightseeing
in a Toyota HiLux diesel 4WD. For more information about this
