Toby was making tracks for Victoria 's famous high country.
He headed for Mt Buller, about 230kms north-east of Melbourne .
And he did it in a new Toyota Kluger - which had some real grunt. |
The new 3.5L VVTi engine has 200 kilowatts of power, which makes it the most powerful non-turbo vehicle in its class. So you can be sure the Kluger is one seriously quick SUV. |
But he wasn't in that big a hurry. Before he climbed to the snowline, he checked out a popular Victorian waterway, Lake Nillahcootie .
'Nillahcootie' is an Indian word meaning 'Blue House'. |
The lake is famous for its carp, redfin and yellowbelly, and it also happens to be a favourite haunt of gun fly-fisher Geoff Hall.
Geoff agreed to give Toby what you might call the dummies' guide to fly fishing. |
Geoff explained that what you want to do is produce a wave of energy from the rod that passes all the way down the line and lays everything outflat, so that the leader is fully extended. |
Toby may have mastered the cast, but the fish weren't fooled. They knew he was a novice and they were lying low.
So it was time for Toby to hit the high road. |
And round those parts, the high road had ice and snow on it.
Thankfully the Kluger just devoured the slippery stuff. |
Obviously traction is the key when driving in icy conditions, and downhill assist control takes a lot of guesswork out of steep, slippery slopes, by automatically braking for you. |
It was a pity Toby's snowboard didn't have a similar feature!
Mt Buller has 80km of trails over 263 hectares. |
Mt Buller is just 3hrs drive from Melbourne and has the largest vertical drop in Victoria , making it popular with Melbournians and within easy reach for everybody else. |
